First, measure from the top of the window frame to the bottom of the window frame. Shutters should exactly match the height of the window trim from top to bottom.
Shutters should not appear as too wide, too narrow, or too short for a window. Keep this in mind when selecting a width. Select the width of the shutter based upon the size of the window and the distance from adjacent windows or the spacing between windows. For example, if the home has three windows side by side, consider the size of each window and the spacing between windows before selecting the width of the shutter. If there are no windows side by side, then select the width of the shutter based upon size of the window and the height of the window’s trim. A best fit width should work with all of your windows if possible.
But, if the window is situated close to an edge of the home or an inside corner, there are adjustments to the width of the shutter that need to be taken into consideration. Don’t put a narrow width shutter on a medium size or large window. The same should be said for narrow windows. Don’t put a wide shutter on a narrow window.
It is recommended that finding a shutter width that works for all the windows on the home is the best option. The width of the shutter should be 25% to 33% of the total width of the window including the window trim. Measuring the entire window is a good idea to help determine the shutter width and measuring the trim height is necessary to select the correct height of the shutter.
